As noted yesterday, MMAWeekly.com reported that a heavyweight scrap between Ben Rothwell (31-7) and Mark Hunt (6-7) is in the works for UFC 135 in September. The UFC confirmed the report, stating that the bout has been verbally agreed to.
“Verbal agreements are in for a battle between heavyweights as devastating striker Mark ‘The Super Samoan’ Hunt faces the 6′ 4″ powerhouse Ben Rothwell on September 24 in Denver, Colorado,” announced UFC President Dana White.
It will be Rothwell’s first fight since his victory over Gilbert Yvel at UFC 115 in June of 2010. The heavyweight suffered a torn ACL which has kept him out of action. The former IFL veteran is 1-1 in the UFC, having suffered a second round TKO loss in his debut with the organization to current champion Cain Velasquez at UFC 104 on October 24, 2009.
PRIDE veteran Mark Hunt is coming off his first UFC win over Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 127 last February, his first victory since May of 2006. Like Rothwell, Hunt is 1-1 in the organization, having lost to Sean McCorkle in his UFC debut via first round submission at UFC 119 on September 25, 2010.
UFC 135 will place on September 24, 2011 from the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO. The event is expected to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and top contender Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
