UFC 131: Nick Ring Vs. James Head

Herb Dean is the third man in the cage for this middleweight fight.

Round 1: Ring lands a leg kick to get off first. Ring landing mostly what he wants to without much answer in the first minute of the bout. Ring gets the plum and shows a good knowledge of control in that position. Ring lands some nice knees and punches. Ring hits a single-leg takedown with ease, taking side control in the center of the octagon. Ring takes north-south, but Head regains guard. Head gets to his feet. Head pushes forward with a good right hand-knee combination. Ring returns fire, but is clipped in the subsequent exchange and sent to the mat. He gets hold of Head from the guard, but they get back to their feet shortly after. Head is looking for the finish with a minute and a half to go, but Ring is pushing forward now, landing with a nice front kick and some follow up punches. A minute to go. Head lands a nice right hand and some nice short elbows from the clinch. Ring hits a takedown and lands in half guard with about forty seconds to go. scores the round 10-9 for Ring

Round 2: Ring working the leg kicks before going for the takedown and landing it again. Ring takes side control. Ring looking to establish the mounted crucifix, but goes for the mounted triangle instead. He loses the position, but holds side control on Head. Now north-south. Head fights back to his feet, but Ring gets him back down in fairly short order. Ring isn’t getting off with terribly effective offense, but he is continually improving position. Against the cage, Ring starts to hammer away at Head. He goes for the rear naked choke but Head shucks him off. Ring stays on him though, passing guard with ease. With Head bleeding profusely from his nose, Dean halts the action and calls the doctor in. They restart the action in the same position, with Dean showing why he’s one of the best in the game. Ring dropping some elbows from side control, the cut on Head’s nose pouring blood into his eyes. Ring having his way with Head on the ground, just dominating the grappling exchanges. scores the round 10-9 for Ring
