Shane Carwin Plans To Beat Dos Santos Tonight, Then Go After Title

In one of the most intriguing heavyweight match ups in recent memory, former interim heavyweight champ Shane Carwin will take on number one contender Junior Dos Santos tonight in the main event of UFC 131 and it’s hard to see their bout doing anything other than delivering fireworks.

Though such things are never promised in MMA, Carwin and Dos Santos possess some of the heaviest hands and feared striking in the division, with the two owning fifteen combined knockouts in twenty-four combined victories. Considering the likelihood that their bout will not go the distance, Carwin is entering the match with a ruthless mindset.

“I just happen to be really good at fighting, and I make a living doing it,” said Carwin. “I like Junior Dos Santos, I respect Junior Dos Santos, but I’m gonna knock him out, or I’m gonna tap him out, and I’m not going to feel any remorse for it.”

The difference between the two is that Carwin has managed to translate his experience as a NCAA Division-2 wrestler into serious MMA grappling chops, which he believes will be too much for his Brazilian opponent.

“Junior Dos Santos can’t match my wrestling skills,” he said. “I’ve been wrestling since I was six years old.”

The bottom line is clear to Carwin: his ultimate goal of a title shot lay just beyond Dos Santos and he will do everything within his power to ensure that “Cigano” doesn’t stop him from achieving his goal.

“This is real simple. I’m not paid by the round, I’m paid to win,” he said. “My whole dream is to be the UFC champion, and to get that title shot I’ve got to go through Junior Dos Santos.

“I don’t have a doubt in my mind that I’ll beat Junior Dos Santos, and then I’m going after the title.”

UFC 131: Dos Santos vs. Carwin takes place tonight from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. Don’t forget to check back here later this afternoon for our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
