The recent announcement that UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s next title defense will come against Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz opened the doors to the kind of champion vs. champion fights that MMA fans have been speculating over ever since Zuffa purchased the Strikeforce promotion.
Speaking during this week’s Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum media conference call, Strikeforce heavyweight champion called for such a fight against UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez — provided he win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
“If I would win the tournament, I personally –- and I believe many fans with me –- would love to see the [winner] of the tournament against the UFC champion, Cain Velasquez,” said the 34-11 Dutchman.
For his part, Overeem’s impending opponent Fabricio Werdum — who was once employed by the UFC — would relish the chance to compete again in his old stomping grounds and believes that a tournament victory should open the door for him to face Velasquez.
“I think it’s going to be very good to participate in this huge event that is UFC,” Werdum said. “I want to be the champ of this grand prix, and after that, (I want to) defeat the champ of the UFC.”
Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum goes down next weekend at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
