As is seemingly the pattern for many of the UFC’s number one contenders right now, heavyweight Junior dos Santos has taken a fight to stay active while champion Cain Velasquez recovers from a shoulder injury.
“Cigano” will square off against former interim champion Shane Carwin this weekend in the main event of UFC 131 and, considering that the two have similar, knockout-heavy records, their fight promises fireworks. Dos Santos knows that he has his work cut out for him against a dangerous fellow knockout artist, but he believes in his striking skills over Carwin’s.
“Shane Carwin is a very dangerous fighter, like Brock Lesnar is, but I think his stand up skills are very good,” said dos Santos. “I have to be careful with his hands because he got heavy hands. I’m faster than him and I got better skills, stand up skills than him. I will try to use my speed to beat him. I will try to keep this fight because I believe so much in my boxing skills and I think I can knock anybody out. So, I will try to do that.”
Dos Santos was originally scheduled to face Brock Lesnar on the card, but drew the equally dangerous Carwin when Lesnar experienced a flare-up of the dangerous intestinal illness diverticulitis.
Dos Santos and Carwin will meet Saturday night at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. Don’t forget to check back on FightLine.com on the night for our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
