GSP To Nick Diaz: “It’s Time To Walk The Walk”

UFC president Dana White broke the exciting news earlier this week that UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will be fighting Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz this October under the UFC banner. It wasn’t long after that St-Pierre discussed the bout with the Canadian Press, revealing his excitement for the bout and why he’s been looking forward to facing Diaz for a long time.

“I’m excited, because it’s been a long time he’s been talking about me, saying like he’s the best, he was saying I was avoiding him and stuff,” said St-Pierre. “But I never avoid anybody. Now it’s time to walk the walk. It’s going to be a good fight.”

Diaz, who can be seen as the antithesis to GSP, is known for taking his opponents on in what’s considered to be their area of expertise to prove that he’s better than them beyond a shadow of a doubt. In his most recent bout, Diaz engaged in a gutter brawl with British slugger Paul Daley, keeping things on the feet despite being one of the highest level Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt’s in the sport.

St-Pierre told the CP that he welcomes the challenge that a gritty fighter like Diaz brings to the table.

“I know Diaz, the way he is,” he said. “He’s the kind of guy I’m happy to fight. I like fighting guys who are not easy like this, that have a kind of warrior spirit.”

Many believe that Diaz represents GSP’s last true test at 170lbs.; for his part, St-Pierre sees Diaz as an electric fighter who will push him to perform at his best.

“I don’t know him as a person but he’s a very exciting guy to watch,” said St-Pierre. “I’m happy to fight him. He’s going to bring the best out of me, because he’s always putting on a good fight, going forward. It’s going to be a good fight for me.”

St-Pierre and Diaz will determine who the best welterweight in the world is in the main event of UFC 137 on October 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
