Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir dominated Roy Nelson this past Saturday at UFC 130 for three rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory.
Nelson was tired by the end of the first round and was absolutely gassed by the end of the fight, which seemed odd since his conditioning was excellent in his prior bout, a three-round slugfest with Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 last August.
Yahoo Sports! revealed that Nelson had been dealing with “walking pneumonia” in the first couple of weeks of May. Nelson confirmed the illness to Sherdog.com, citing it as the reason his conditioning wasn’t up to par in the fight, while asserting that “Frank [was] the better man” that night.
Nelson noted that he has yet to recover from the illness, stating, “[I’m] not feeling better… Feels like I picked a scab off of my lung.”
Nelson went on to say that he in currently taking medication for the illness and expects to be back to normal in “a couple of weeks.” He also revealed that he will be making some important changes in the future.
UFC President Dana White made it clear earlier this week that he was not happy with Nelson’s performance and plans on meeting with the heavyweight this Friday to discuss his future plans.
With the loss to Mir, Nelson’s record dropped to 15-6 and makes it 0-2 in his last two outings.
