Who’s up next for a shot at Jonny “Bones” Jones’ light heavyweight title?
Quite possibly the winner between this weekend’s UFC 130 main event between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Matt Hamill, according to UFC president Dana White. White spoke with gathered media on Wednesday for the UFC 130 pre-fight presser, where he explained that Jackson vs. Hamill carries with it serious title implications.
“Obviously Rampage is one of the best in the world at 205lbs. This is a huge fight for Matt Hamill. He has had some good wins, he beat Keith Jardine, [Mark] Munoz, Tito [Ortiz] — a win over Rampage would be huge,” said White. “This is one of those career-defining moments for Matt Hamill, should he be able to pull off a win on Saturday night. And Rampage is already one of the best in the world, if he gets the win on Saturday night he is in the mix for a title shot.”
As we’ve come to learn, until someone signs on the dotted line (and often times, even then) there are no sure things in MMA matchmaking and White’s favored phrase, “in the mix,” is an ambiguous marker of someone’s position in a given division, at best.
Who fights Jones for the title next and when are things that are completely up in the air currently and may not be sorted out until mid-summer, or possibly later.
