Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is currently once again battling the intestinal ailment diverticulitis. The disease, which forced him to take a year away from the sport between 2009-2010 and to also consider retirement, recently flared up again and forced him out of a planned bout with his opposing The Ultimate Fighter 13 coach Junior dos Santos next month.
UFC President Dana White revealed at yesterday’s UFC 130 pre-fight press conference that Lesnar may be back sooner than expected.
“I am still very optimistic that Brock [Lesnar] will bounce back from this thing and be back sooner than everyone thinks,” said White. “Maybe by the first of the year.”
In the meantime, Shane Carwin will take Lesnar’s spot to face dos Santos at UFC 131 next month, with the winner of that bout likely going on to face UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.
UFC 131: Dos Santos vs. Carwin will take place on June 11, 2011 from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.
