Partly because it’s an incredibly tantalizing match up and partly because the MMA media is often fueled by rumors, the news that a welterweight match up between UFC champ Georges St-Pierre and Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz was likely on the table gave birth to rumors of fight dates and coaching slots on The Ultimate Fighter.
St-Pierre vs. Diaz has already been linked to the UFC 140 fight card, which is likely to take place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec and there have been reports issued all but announcing that the two will serve as coaches on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.
UFC president Dana White spoke with Fight Day’s (through Heavy.com) Megan Olivi recently and basically told everyone to slow their roll with the St-Pierre vs. Diaz rumors.
“That fight is not a done deal and I guarantee you that those two will not be coaches, not even close,” said White when questioned on the status of St-Pierre vs. Diaz. “All this stuff that’s out there about that fight and the meeting that we had here is all bullshit.”
And what about the two of them fighting at UFC 140, Dana? “No.”
The UFC have flat-out denied rumors before, only to announce them publicly later on and it is often the case with MMA rumors that where there is smoke, there is fire. This early on, there is little more than base speculation to go off of, so the best (only) approach is simply to wait and see.
