Pride FC legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will be making his return to MMA competition following over a yearlong absence from the sport, during which he underwent double hip surgery as well as endured an operation on his knee.
Despite having the deck stacked against him for his comeback, Nogueira didn’t take a tune-up fight, opting instead to accept a bout against fast-rising young prospect Brendan Schaub, for which he recently told Tatame.com he has high expectations.
“I’ll do my homework and watch his bouts. He’s a good boxer, uses the distance, but I’m prepared to strike. I won’t keep trying to take him down all the time. I’ll try to do my best, no matter where things are. I’m not worried about him,” said “Big Nog.” “I want to be at my best, in a good shape, because I believe in myself. I want to be focused in being in my best shape ever. He’s a tall and thin guy, knows how to deal with the distance, he’s a good wrestler, he punches hard, but I’ll really go for it.”
“Minotauro” and “The Hybrid” will meet this August 27 at UFC 134, which takes place in Nogueira’s home country of Brazil. The two heavyweights will be sharing the card with a host of the most exciting fighters on the UFC’s roster, but Nogueira believes it will be he and Schaub who will deliver the most exciting fight of the night.
“It’ll be mine,” he said when asked which bout will be the best of the evening. “I’ll submit him. It’ll be a good bout. (Schaub) is a warrior. It’ll be a pretty busy fight for the heavyweight division.”
UFC 134 will take place at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
