UFC 129: José Aldo Vs. Mark Hominick (UFC Featherweight Championship)

Hominick comes out to the roaring applause of a hometown crowd, hat pulled low and looking like he means business.

Much like he did when he crashed Sacramento and beat up Urijah “The California Kid” Faber, Aldo enters the arena to “Run this Town” by Jay-Z, also looking fired up.

“Big” John McCarthy will ref this championship bout.

Round 1: They touch gloves to start things. Aldo moves in first with an uppercut-straight combo. Then a leg kick and a heavy uppercut to the body. Aldo with another leg kick. Another left hook to the liver, followed by another leg kick. Hominick moves in with a left hand of his own. Hominick has no time to check Aldo’s leg kicks, but he catches a front kick and knocks the champ off balance. Aldo gets to his feet and lands another leg kick. Aldo drives for a rare takedown and gets it, where Hominick looks for an armbar. Aldo has Hominick against the fence, but Hominick is too active for him to get much offense going. Aldo getting some elbows in and looks to have cut Hominick. A minute to go and McCarthy looks very close to standing them up. And he does. Aldo lands another leg kick, Hominick returns a left hook and Aldo completes another takedown with ten to go.

Round 2: They touch gloves again. Aldo with a leg kick. Hominick trying to walk down the champion, landing a nice left hook to the body. Aldo lands a nice uppercut. Aldo looking slightly fatigued, perhaps as a result of a difficult weight cut. Hominick stuffs a takedown and lands a nice straight right-left hook combo. Hominick is putting together his hands and outboxing the champ. Aldo gets the takedown. Hominick doing well at keeping Aldo from establishing much offense from the top. Until he cracks “The Machine” with a two big punches. McCarthy stands them up with a minute to go. Hominick lands a nice leg kick before Aldo drives back in and gets another takedown, landing in side control.

Round 3: Aldo with a big uppercut, but his punches look to have lost a little oomph. Hominick with an inside leg kick. Aldo with a leg kick. Hominick landing with punches on the feet, but Aldo displaying great head movement in avoiding many of them. Good one-two from Aldo. Aldo moves in for another takedown behind a few strikes and Hominick avoids it. Aldo with a nice counter left hook-leg kick combination. Aldo landing some punches with heat on the now. Hominick lands a nice straight right hand. Aldo gets the takedown briefly, but Hominick gets back to his feet. Hominick with a pair of jabs, making Aldo miss. Aldo wobbles Hominick with a right hand and follows him to the mat with ground and pound. Hominick looks to have recovered. Aldo lands a few punches from Hominick’s guard, then a nice elbow.

Hominick is looking pretty battered.

Round 4: Aldo with a chopping leg kick. Aldo lands a strong right hand; he hits low afterward and stops to apologize, event though the ref didn’t stop things. Aldo misses on a knee and lands low with his foot on accident. Aldo with a pair of leg kicks that are slowing Hominick down now. Aldo with another liver shot-leg kick combo. Hominick with a pair of jabs. Aldo sends Hominick to the mat with a straight right and follows him there, pressing him into the cage. Hominick has a goose egg on his forehead that must weigh a full pound. Aldo is beating Hominick down. McCarthy stops the fight to check Hominick’s head. I’ve never seen a hematoma that large on a fighter’s head before, it’s grotesque. Even though it looks like something is growing out of his head, Hominick continues. Aldo gets the takedown as the round closes.

Before the start of the round, the doctor reenters the cage to check Hominick’s forehead. He lets it go.

Round 5: Aldo starts it off with a leg kick. Aldo slips a punch and lands a big left hook. Aldo lands a huge uppercut before Hominick takes him down, landing in half guard. Hominick is bleeding heavily from a cut on his cheek. Hominick landing some ground and pound from the top position. Hominick is stinging Aldo with punches from on top. Hominick is landing frequently, inciting a roar of the crowd. Whether or not he takes the title, Hominick is taking it to Aldo like no one has before. He is landing almost at will now and, with over a minute to go, a finish is possible. Thirty to go and Hominick is still beating Aldo up. Aldo is just surviving here.

Aldo gives all the props to Mark Hominick and said that he got a little heavier than usual between fights due to his long injury layoff.

Hominick thanks “Big” John for not stopping the fight and apologizes for stressing out his wife.
