Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields’ impending fight for the UFC welterweight crown tonight is a historic one on account of the fact that it marks the UFC’s first trip into Toronto since the sport was recently legalized in the province.
For St. Pierre, it represents yet another opportunity to fight in front his home country and to bask in the overwhelming support of his countrymen. For Shields, it is the chance to finally prove he’s the best in the world at 170 lbs.
“He’s been the guy that I’ve been looking at for years as the king,” Shields admitted of St. Pierre. “Fighting him, I haven’t been able to put it out of my mind. It’s pretty much been eating, sleeping, breathing Georges St. Pierre. I’m ready to get this over with. I’m sick of him.”
UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields goes down tonight at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Don’t forget to check back later this afternoon for our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
