Georges St-Pierre “Very Scared” Heading Into Tonight

UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre and top contender Jake Shields will finally square off tonight to contest St. Pierre’s long-held strap.

The storyline for this title fight is fairly straightforward: Shields is the under-respected fighter who’s spent most of his career outside of the UFC and in St. Pierre’s shadow, despite surpassing the French-Canadian’s run of dominance, while St. Pierre is the unbeatable champion searching for greatness.

St. Pierre — who is forever haunted by the time he bought his own hype, took Matt Serra lightly and ended up knocked out as a result — explained that he is driven to stay sharp by his fear of losing to Shields.

“I’m very nervous,” said St. Pierre. “I’m very scared. I’m at my best when I feel I’m right on the edge,” he said. “When I feel I’m right about to fall off the edge, that’s when I perform my best, and that’s the situation.”

The two men will meet in the main event of UFC 129, which goes down tonight at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Don’t forget to check back on on the night for our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
