Gina Carano is back in the game and looks to have an opponent set for her long-awaited return to MMA competition. MMAJunkie.com is reporting that a bout against fellow women’s middleweight Sarah D’Alelio is being set up for “Conviction” and is tentatively scheduled for Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum this summer.
Carano established herself as the early face of women’s MMA as much due to her success in the ring as to her crossover appeal, which she gathered through various TV and movie roles. After racking up a seven-fight undefeated streak, Carano met her stiffest test to date when she took on Cristiane “Cyborg Santos for the Strikeforce women’s middleweight title in August of 2009. Her larger, more aggressive opponent took the fight and the belt (which she still holds) with a first round TKO — Carano has focused on her acting career ever since.
In order to best prepare herself for her return to action, Carano has pulled up stakes and relocated her training from Las Vegas at Xtreme Couture to Albuquerque, New Mexico at Jackson – Winkeljohn MMA. Her new coach, the renowned Greg Jackson spoke with MMAJunkie about the newest addition to his imposing stable of female fighters.
“She’s got the talent, and she has a great work ethic,” Jackson said. “Those two things will take you as far as your will can. As I get to know her more as far as helping her out for the fight, we’ll get to a better sense of it. But, she definitely has all the talent and all the potential in the world.”
D’Alelio recently posted her first loss as a pro, snapping a four-fight winning streak she had amassed. “The Monster” dropped a unanimous decision to Julie Kedzie last December at Jackson’s MMA Series 3. Three of her wins have come via submission, the other via TKO.
Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum will take place this June 18 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
