Nate Marquardt Feels He Can Be The Best In The Welterweight Division

The UFC this week officially announced UFC Live On Versus 4 at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. In the night’s main event, former middleweight title challenger Nate “The Great” Marquardt will face Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

A former challenger to the UFC middleweight title, Marquardt makes his welterweight debut in Pittsburgh and hopes to spark a run toward a championship. “The Great” has expressed interest in changing weight divisions since his unanimous decision victory over Dan Miller at UFC 128 last month.

“I feel like I can be the best fighter at 170,” said Marquardt. “In my last fight (at middleweight), I felt really great and I noticed that I was lighter. So I think my body might be better suited for this weight class.”

With victories over Jeremy Horn, Martin Kampmann, Demian Maia, Rousimar Palhares and Miller, the 31-year-old believes a fight with Johnson is a perfect way to launch his career at 170-pounds. Johnson is coming off of a dominant unanimous decision victory over former top welterweight contender Dan Hardy at UFC Fight Night 24 last month, his first bout in over 14 months after he was defeated by Josh Koscheck at UFC 106.

“Anthony Johnson is a good striker and he’s a former junior college national wrestling champion,” Marquardt noted. “I have a lot of respect for him in that regard. I just know that my skills are better in each area and I plan on coming out on top.”

UFC Live 4 will be televised nationally live on VERSUS on June 26 beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Tickets go on sale to the public this Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. ET.
