As we reported yesterday, the UFC officially announced UFC Live On Versus 4 at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. In the night’s main event, former middleweight title challenger Nate “The Great” Marquardt will make his debut at 170-pounds when he battles Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.
“Nate Marquardt is an incredible athlete and his size and strength could make him a force in the UFC welterweight division,” UFC President Dana White said. “He’s not getting an easy fight for his first time at 170 pounds though. ‘Rumble’ has knockout power and great wrestling, and will make a huge statement if he beats Nate.”
A top contender in the UFC’s middleweight division, Marquardt will be dropping down to welterweight for the bout. “The Great” has expressed interest in changing weight divisions since his unanimous decision victory over Dan Miller at UFC 128 last month. He has been near the top of the division since his UFC debut in 2005 with wins over Jeremy Horn, Martin Kampmann, Demian Maia, Rousimar Palhares and Dan Miller.
Johnson (9-3) is coming off of a dominant unanimous decision victory over former top welterweight contender Dan Hardy at UFC Fight Night 24 last month, his first bout in over 14 months after he was defeated by Josh Koscheck at UFC 106. “Rumble” believes a win over “The Great” would be the signature victory his record needs.
“This is definitely the biggest fight of my career and it’s going to be against the toughest guy I’ve ever fought,” Johnson said. “At first, I was really surprised to hear that Nate was heading to welterweight. But it only adds fuel to the fire in this weight class. He is a great opponent with a lot of experience and I need to be sharper than I’ve ever been for this fight.”
UFC Live 4 will be televised nationally live on VERSUS on June 26 beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Tickets go on sale to the public this Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. ET.
