The Urijah Faber – Dominick Cruz battle for the UFC bantamweight championship will not be the only 145lb. bout at UFC 132 this July. The organization announced that former WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles will face Takeya Mizugaki at the event as well.
“Brian Bowles looks to regain the bantamweight championship title, but first he’ll have to take on hard-hitting perennial top-10 contender Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 132,” stated UFC President Dana White.
Fighting out Athens, Georgia, Bowles rode an eight-fight undefeated streak en route to defeating Miguel Torres for the WEC bantamweight title before dropping the belt to current champion Dominick Cruz. Cruz defeated Bowles via TKO (doctor stoppage) in the second round when it was determined that Bowles could no longer continue to fight due to a broken hand. Bowles last competed at UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann in March, defeating Damacio Page via submission in the first round.
Like Bowles, Mizugaki is coming off a victory at UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann, garnering a split-decision victory over Reuben Duran. He has split his last six fights, balancing losses to Miguel Torres, Scott Jorgensen, and Urijah Faber with victories over Jeff Curran, Rani Yahya and Duran. Mizugaki is best known for his memorable scrap with Torres, which saw him take Torres to deeper water than any previous opponent during his WEC title reign.
UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber takes place on July 2, 2011 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada
