Call him crazy, call him a cheat, call him what you will, but don’t doubt Chael Sonnen’s mettle.
The UFC middleweight contender has long held that he is willing to step into the cage against any man and though many have written off these claims as bombast, the controversial Oregonian’s manager, Mike Roberts, recently spoke with MMAWeekly.com and revealed that Sonnen very recently demonstrated the truthfulness in his assertions.
“The thing about Chael is when he does all these interviews, and he sounds crazy when he says ‘I’ll fight any man God ever created.’ He’s telling the truth,” said Roberts.
According to Roberts, when Thiago Silva was forced out of his planned bout with former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Sonnen was first in line asking to step in on Silva’s behalf. Matt Hamill was eventually chosen to fill in for Silva, but the fact still stands that Sonnen was willing to step up to fight one of the top contenders in a heavier weight class.
“When Rampage’s initial opponent went down before all this fiasco was going on, before Hamill stepped in to take the fight, when that went down I was with Chael and he was like ‘I’d love to fight Rampage.’ And I was like, ‘but you’re at 185-pounder’ and he was like, ‘I’d fight him in a heartbeat,'” Roberts recounted.
With his legal troubles seemingly behind him and only a few more hoops to jump through to clear himself with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Sonnen should be returning to action before too long. Though nothing is even near official, it is being rumored that Sonnen will be returning to action in his home division against British standout Michael Bisping.
