Controversial Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz has threatened to drop his 4 ouncers for a pair of boxing gloves before, citing his disillusionment with MMA and the bigger paychecks that boxing offers as his impetus to make the switch.
According to a recent interview Diaz’s manager Cesar Gracie gave to the crew at HDNet’s Inside MMA, seeing Diaz in the squared circle practicing the sweet science could come much sooner rather than later.
“We’re looking at a big name,” Gracie said of what would be Diaz’s second pro boxing bout. “We’re looking at some guys with name recognition. Maybe not the top guy in the world necessarily, but someone that the public knows. I’d love Vargas to get in there with him. Fernando Vargas.”
Once a middleweight champion, Vargas has not fought since 2007 and he is currently on a three-fight losing skid, having dropped bouts to Shane Mosley (2x) and Ricardo Mayorga. He is scheduled to make his return to the ring tomorrow night against Henry Buchanan.
Gracie told Inside MMA that the bout is all but confirmed at this point — Diaz has put his name on the dotted line and now they are just waiting for Vargas to do the same.
“I know they’ve contacted him and he’s very interested,” said Gracie. “We’ve actually signed on the dotted line for that fight ourselves and we’re waiting for him now.
“It’s on already, we’re looking at September, October for something like that.”
