Wanderlei Silva and Chris Leben have been campaigning for a fight against each other on their Twitter accounts for the past several months, however UFC President Dana White had been stating that he wanted Silva to face Vitor Belfort next.
It appears that “The Axe Murderer” got his way, as the UFC officially announced today that Leben will face Silva at UFC 132 this July.
“Two fan favorites will go to war as Chris ‘The Crippler’ Leben has verbally agreed to face Wanderlei ‘The Axe Murderer’ Silva in Las Vegas July 2nd,” said UFC President Dana White.
Silva and Leben have expressed interest in fighting each other ever since Leben stepped up in an injured Silva’s place against Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116 last July. Both men have cited their respect for the other and his body of work as being the primary reasons for wanting the fight, in addition to the fact that they would almost assuredly put on a barnburner for the fans.
UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber II is expected to take place on July 2, 2011 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
