UFC middleweight fighter Michael Bisping has taken a lot of heat for his antics at UFC 127 aimed at Jorge Rivera and his cornermen. Everyone from Vitor Belfort and Chael Sonnen to Nate Marquardt have called out Bisping for his disrespectful behavior and, virtually having his pick of opponents now, Bisping isn’t afraid of being choosy.
In a recent appearance on MMAFighting.com’s The MMA Hour with host Ariel Helwani, Bisping revealed which one of his suitors he would most like to meet in the cage and to which one he won’t give the time of day.
“I want to fight Chael Sonnen because No. 1, he’s an amazing fighter,” Bisping told Helwani. “When he fought last, he looked fantastic, and I want to challenge myself. He’s the No. 2 ranked middleweight in the world. Obviously I can’t fight No. 1 because he’s got a title shot, so I want to fight the No. 2 guy.”
Though Bisping was pushed to the verge of hysterics by Jorge Rivera’s constant needling before their UFC 127 meeting, he rather enjoys Sonnen’s brand of insult and looks forward to the back and forth that would come about in the lead up to their fight.
“The things that Chael Sonnen comes out with, they’re so outlandish that you can’t help but laugh,” he said. “Listen, I think he’s brilliant. I’ve watched the stuff from his last fight. I was in stitches. I was laughing my ass off. Even comments he said about me after my last fight, I just had to laugh at that. You can’t not laugh. Of course he’s going to get in my head at the time, but hopefully I’ve learned from recent experiences. It’ll make for a great fight I’m sure.”
While Bisping welcomes Sonnen’s bid to fight him, he scoffs at Nate Marquardt’s. “The Great” has made several indictment’s of Bisping’s character and has said that he would even be willing to postpone a possible move to welterweight for a fight against the man he calls “a total punk.” “The Count” fired back at Marquardt, calling him out on the positive steroid test that he registered after his UFC debut and also for his foul-laden performance against Thales Leites.
“That guy, he’s quite a hypocrite. He’s a steroid cheat, let’s not forget that,” said Bisping, referencing Marquardt’s 2006 positive test results for the anabolic steroid nandrolone. “He’s had points taken away for illegally kneeing people himself, and then he goes out talking about me as if I’m Satan or something. The guy’s an absolute hypocrite.”
Furthermore, Bisping doesn’t even believe that Marquardt ranks among the middleweight division’s elite anymore for having lost in several high-profile, clutch bouts.
“He s—- the bed every time he’s in a main event. He’s had three No. 1 contender fights and a title shot and lost them all,” he said. “I want to fight the top guys and I think Chael Sonnen for me is the biggest possible name I could get, and that’s what I’m hoping for. Nate Marquardt doesn’t excite me.”
