Jake Shields is working hard to prove to the MMA world once again why it’s a bad idea to underestimate him ahead of his impending title fight against pound-for-pound great Georges St. Pierre.
During last night’s Spike TV broadcast of UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis Shields spoke with UFC color man Joe Rogan about what he’s doing to ready himself for “Rush” and why he has the right mindset to take the belt.
“So far things are going great, camp’s going good…,” said Shields before revealing, “We’ve got Chael Sonnen coming out this week, things are going good. I’m pushing, I’m in great shape. I’m just excited, I’m ready to go.”
A former multi-division, multi-promotional champion, Shields explained that he has always had his eye on the UFC belt and the man who’s held it since 2008.
“I’m excited, this is a fight I’ve wanted for years,” he said. “I’ve been champ for multiple other shows — that’s all great and I’m proud of that — but the UFC’s always been the show that I wanted to be at. These other titles are great, but my eye has always been on the UFC and Georges St-Pierre, you know, he’s had the belt for the last 3 or 4 years. He’s the guy I’ve wanted to fight and I’ve finally got that opportunity, and I couldn’t be more excited. I can’t just wait to go out there and get it on next month.”
Shields isn’t taking the fight lightly though, and knows he’s in store for a tough night against one of the sport’s very best.
“It’s going to be an all out war, you know Georges is a great fighter,” said Shields. “He’s one of the best out there without a doubt, I think it’s going to be an all-out fight. It’s probably going to go into the later rounds, but I see myself getting him down and submitting him at some point.”
Shields and St. Pierre will meet at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario for UFC 129 this April 30.
