UFC Fight Night 24: Michael McDonald Vs. Edwin Figueroa

Round 1: They touch gloves and get settled in the center. McDonald lands first with a leg kick and Figueroa whiffs on a big overhand right. McDonald backing Figueroa up with strikes, Figueroa doing his best to hang on while throwing big haymakers. McDonald looks to have Figueroa in trouble but he regains his composure. Figueroa’s Muay Thai is highly touted but McDonald is taking it to him in the striking department. McDonald is completely outclassing Figueroa on the feet, landing easily with clean punches and nice kicks. Figueroa lands with a solid shot. McDonald makes Figueroa pay for a Superman punch attempt with a flurry of blows. McDonald gets a takedown from off of the cage. They hit their feet again, with Figueroa showing gameness if nothing else. scores the round 10-9 for McDonald

Figueroa got rocked at the bell.

Round 2: Figueroa lands first with a nice head kick but McDonald eats it and takes him down right away. Figueroa looking for a kneebar but McDonald holds out and takes Figueroa’s back with both hooks in. McDonald looking for the rear naked choke but Figueroa hangs in there and avoids it. McDonald looking to slap on a triangle/armbar combo and it looks like Figueroa’s in trouble but he manages to extricate himself from danger. Figueroa sitting in McDonald’s guard landing some decent shots from on top. McDonald goes for the triangle again and Figueroa scoots out, showing incredible heart. McDonald goes for the triangle/armbar again and again he looks to have Figueroa in deep trouble before he finds his way out. Figueroa landing some big shots from on top and takes McDonald’s back at the end of the round. scores the round 10-9 McDonald

Round 3: Let’s see how tired McDonald’s legs are from the repeated triangle attempts. He looks considerably slower at the start of the round and gets tagged by a nice right hook from Figueroa. Both men clearly showing signs of fatigue, but still standing in the middle and swinging away. Goldberg reminds us that Figueroa took this fight on one week’s notice. Figueroa is teeing off on McDonald against the cage now and looks to have hurt the younger fighter. Figueroa pushing forward but McDonald stops his momentum by scoring a takedown. Figueroa tries a sweep and though it doesn’t quite work, he manages to get back to his feet briefly before McDonald gets him back down. Figueroa avoids a sub attempt from McDonald and lands in McDonald’s side control. McDonald regains guard. McDonald rolls for another armbar which Figueroa avoids. Figueroa lets him up, McDonald is slow to rise. Figueroa jumps in with a knee and lands but gets tagged with a counter. He throws a head kick before getting taken down again. McDonald with ground and pound at the bell. scores the round 10-9 for McDonald

Great showing by both men, especially Figueroa considering the short notice on which he took the fight.
