Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker today revealed to MMAWeekly.com that the winner of the impending light heavyweight contest between Gegard Mousasi and Mike Kyle will likely be the next contender to Dan Henderson’s newly-acquired throne.
“Gegard fighting Mike Kyle is going to be the front runner to the title fight against Dan Henderson,” said Coker. “I think that fight will happen some time in the fall.”
Mousasi and Kyle will face off this April 9 on the main card of Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley.
A former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, Mousasi rebounded from his title-relinquishing loss to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal by submitting both Jake O’Brien and Tatsuya Mizuno in DREAM contests. Mousasi’s current professional record stands at 30-3-1.
Mike Kyle’s last appearance actually resulted in a knockout loss, though he took on the second and most recent man to topple Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Silva, in a heavyweight contest and more than held his own in the early goings despite the massive size difference between the two men. A product of the American Kickboxing Academy, Kyle sports a pro record of 18-8-1.
After failing in his Strikeforce promotional debut in a middleweight contest against then-champ Jake Shields, Dan Henderson got back on track by knocking out Renato “Babalu” Sobral and then Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante to win the title.
