BJ Penn Says He’s “Excited” For Rematch With Fitch

Though emotions run high post-fight and fighters often say or do things that they take back later on, there seemed a very real possibility that BJ “The Prodigy” Penn could be hanging up his gloves following his UFC 127 fight against Jon Fitch last month.

The UFC announced earlier this month, at least for one more fight, the scrappy Hawaiian will be staying in the game as he and Fitch will be fighting in a rematch of their first meeting, which ended in a majority draw.

“Dana announced the fight – July 2nd in Vegas – I’m excited about that,” Penn said in a video blog on “As we get closer I’ll put together a training camp, that’s all in the works now.”

Penn fought Fitch, who is widely regarded as the number two welterweight in the UFC, in his second fight back at 170lbs. since losing his lightweight title to Frankie Edgar. Penn showed up to fight against Fitch and did just that, surprising the American Kickboxing Academy team captain early on by shooting for – and getting – takedowns, something the former NCAA Division-1 wrestler was not expecting.

Fitch adapted fairly quickly though and the two battled back and forth until the third round, when Penn seemed to succumb to the larger fighter’s size and conditioning. Fitch ground Penn down for the majority of the third round, putting a question mark on a bout that seemed like it could be going Penn’s way.

The judge’s eventually scored the fight a majority draw, which wasn’t a robbery or foolish call by any means. Since the fight was left seemingly open-ended, the UFC have decided to revisit it this Summer at UFC 132.

UFC 132 is tentatively scheduled for July 2nd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. You can watch’s Penn’s video blog below:
