Another round of match ups has been announced across the MMA world: a UFC middleweight tilt between Kendall Grove and Tim Boetsch, a lightweight scrap between former WEC champ Jamie Varner and Tyler Combs, and a bout between 185lbs. veterans Jeremy Horn and Thales Leites.
A winner of the third season of The Ultimate Fighter, Grove has had mixed results over his last six fights, transitioning back and forth between the win and loss columns. “Da Spyder” has balanced losses to Ricardo Almeida, Mark Muñoz, and Demian Maia with victories over Goran REljic, Jake Rosholt and Jason Day. His most recent appearance came in a losing effort against Maia at The Ultimater Fighter 12 Finale this past December. Boetsch is also coming fresh off of a loss, having succumbed to a second round submission put on by Phil Davis at UFC 123 this past November, bringing his current stint at the UFC to 1-1. In his first go-around in the promotion, Boetsch split the outcomes of four fights, amassing a 2-2 record with losses to Matt Hamill and Jason Brilz and victories over Mike Patt and David Heath.
The two will meet at UFC 130, which is to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, this May 28 (props to FiveOuncesofPain.com).
Once a champion in the WEC’s lightweight division, consecutive losses to Shane Roller and Donald Cerrone preceded by a draw to Kamal Shalorus and a loss to Ben Henderson earned Jamie Varner a pink slip from the promotion this past December. “C-4″ will be taking on 13-7-1 Tyler Combs, whose most recent appearance resulted in a submission loss to Mike Lullo at Chicago Cagefighting Championship.
Varner and Combs are scheduled to face off at XFO 39, which will take place at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois (props to MMAFighting.com).
Finally, UFC middleweight veterans Jeremy Horn and Thales Leites will be fighting in a championship bout for the vacant Superior Challenge middleweight title. The consummate veteran with a record of 87-20-5, Jeremy Horn most recently appeared in action choking out 3-7 Irish fighter Lee McKibbin, rebounding from a defeat to Bryan Baker in the process. Having once challenged UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva for his belt, Leites has gone 4-1 since leaving the UFC, racking up wins over Dean Lister, Rico Washington Sr., Jesse Taylor and, most recently, Tor Troeng. The win over Troeng put him back in the win column after losing to Matt Horwich via submission; he has not appeared in action since October.
The two are set to meet at the Superior Challenge 7 card, which will take place at the Hovet Arena in Stockholm, Sweden (props to Sherdog.com).
