Once the prospect of a super fight between UFC middleweight and welterweight champions Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre was broached and UFC president Dana White expressed interest in the idea, MMA fans and media have been unable to discontinue speculation on the topic. For good reason too, as it is an incredibly tantalizing match up between the sport’s two best pound-for-pound fighters. Those who enjoy avoiding disappointment however, may behoove themselves to not get too excited about the prospective bout, as White recently told MMAJunkie that any discussions of super fights are currently premature.
“This fight isn’t happening,” White said of Silva-St. Pierre. “It’s not a fight yet. It’s still a big fantasy fight. There are still things that need to happen in the meantime before we sit down and discuss where this fight would be, what weight it would be at, how it would work. It’s all just fantasy yet. I literally have not talked to Georges St-Pierre or Anderson Silva about this fight.”
And with last night’s dominant, title-winning performance by Jon Jones drawing comparisons to Anderson Silva, talk of a super fight between those two inventive fighters is heating up. White revealed to MMAJunkie that this fight may be even less likely to occur than St. Pierre-Silva since apparently “The Spider” no longer cares to fight at light heavyweight, despite having turned in two of his best performances in that division.
“Anderson Silva has made it very clear to me that he doesn’t want to fight at 205 pounds,” White said. “That’s why originally when I was always talking about him trying to go for another belt at 205 pounds. … He stuck his big toe in a couple of times because I was pressing the issue. He made it very clear he doesn’t want to fight at 205.”
The UFC boss didn’t write off the bout as an impossibility though, stating that Jones’ habitual impressiveness may be enough to grab Silva’s attention and motivate him for another bout at 205lbs.
“Who knows?” White said. “Maybe he sees a guy as talented as Jon Jones, and he’ll want to try it.”
