UFC 128: Mauricio Rua Vs. Jon Jones

“God Gave Me Grace” by Fifty Cent starts to play on the loudspeakers before cutting out and giving way to “Empire State of Mind” by Jay Z as Jonny “Bones” walks to the cage looking calm and ready. “Shogun” makes his way to the cage to some random techno beats, also looking primed to go. Herb Dean will oversee this championship bout.

Round 1: Jones tries a jumping knee right off the bat. Then he goes for a head kick. Jones misses a spinning back kick. They exchange and Jones gets Rua to the ground with relative ease. Rua working a high guard against the cage. Very little striking offense from either man as they both work for position. Jones gets into full guard and has Rua pressed against the cage. Rua looking for a leg lock or sweep. Jones with elbows to the body. “Shogun” doing well to not take much damage from the bottom. Rua gets to his feet, but Jones hurts him with punches kicks and knees. Rua is wobbled but pressing forward regardless. Jones lands another big knee. Jones lands with a side kick to the knee and is looking to prove everyone of his backers right here. Jones misses on a spinning elbow and Rua fails on a kneebar attempt after taking Jones’ back. Jones gets on top and head butts Rua to the body. scores the round 10-9 for Jones

Round 2: Jones pushes Rua back with a front kick. Rua misses on a looping punch. Jones clinches him against the cage and nails him with a spinning back elbow. Jones scores with a pair of kicks, one low and one high. Jones doesn’t even look like he’s trying and “Shogun” looks like he’s already tiring. Jones sticks him with a left a he tries for a kick. Jones is teeing off on “Shogun,” taking him down off of a leg kick and making him pay for it with ground and pound. Jones with a nice elbow from the top. Rua’s face looking a little worse for the wear. Rua keeps looking to underhook Jones’ leg, but Jones isn’t having it. Jones is warned for strikes to the throat. Jones rolls for a leg lock as the round closes. scores the round 10-9 for Jones

Round 3: Rua is trying to stay in the fight, pushing forward with punches but he is unable to land early on. Rua ducks a head kick and takes Jones’ back standing. He rolls for a kneebar again but Jones avoids and ends up in Rua’s guard. He moves to half guard quickly. Jones makes some space and lands with some big punches from guard. Jones pretends to grab Rua’s leg but hammers him with a right hand instead, following up with a ground and pound onslaught that has Rua in big trouble. “Shogun” gets to his feet but Jones hunts him down and finishes things with a liver shot and a big knee. “Shogun” lay in a heap on the canvas and Jones is the new light heavyweight champ.

Jon Jones defeated Mauricio Rua via TKO (strikes) at 2:37 of Round 3.

Jones doesn’t look very surprised at his new acquisition. He kisses Joe Rogan on the cheek and warns anyone trying to come and take his belt that he’s ready to make a stand. Rua congratulates Jones and concedes that the younger fighter was better than him tonight.

Rashad Evans shows up in the cage, to the crowd’s boos and Jones looks displeased. Jones says he isn’t looking forward to it, but that he is ready and willing to take on Evans. “Suga” congratulates Jones on the win and the two share a tense handshake.
