UFC 131 will see the addition of an exciting middleweight match up between grapplers-first Mark Muñoz and Demian Maia; the match up was just made official by the UFC.
Riding a two-fight winning streak, Mark Muñoz has been establishing himself as a middleweight to watch in the UFC. Following a close split decision loss to Yushin Okami dating back to August, Muñoz took out fellow collegiate wrestling standout Aaron Simpson via unanimous decision and then knocked out CB Dollaway at UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann. “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” sports a record of 10-2, with five of his wins and both of his losses happening in the UFC. He has earned one of his victories by KO, four by TKO, four by decision and one by submission.
Demian Maia has proven time and again that his status as one of the best pure grapplers in MMA is deserved and he has rebounded from an embarrassing loss to Anderson Silva in a title fight back at UFC 112 by defeating both Mario Miranda and Kendall Grove by convincing unanimous decision. Maia owns a record of 14-2, with eight of his wins and both of his losses coming in the UFC. He has won eight bouts via submission, four by decision, and two by TKO. Prior to losing a unanimous decision to Silva, Maia was knocked out by Nate Marquardt at UFC 102.
UFC 131 is planned for June 11 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and will feature a heavyweight contest between former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos.
