Former two-divisional UFC champion Randy “The Natural” Couture currently enjoys running one of the most successful MMA gyms in the world, Xtreme Couture, where some of today’s top fighters are trained, but that isn’t where “The Natural” got his start.
Couture is one of the original founding members of Team Quest, along with Matt Lindland and Dan Henderson, the latter of which earned the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship last Saturday night with a highlight reel knockout over Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante. Couture spoke with MMAInterviews.tv upon the conclusion of Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson and broke down his friend and former teammate’s big win.
“Great fight. Danny did a great job, he stuck to the gameplan,” said Couture, who was in attendance at the event. “He threatened him with the takedowns, he set up his right hand and finally, in the third round, I think ‘Feijao’ slowed down just enough where he was able to catch him with it.”
Henderson broke a personal curse with the win by defeating a Black House team member, considering that his only three submission losses have been doled out by members of the team (Anderson Silva and both Nogueira brothers). Getting a win over “Feijao” was no easy task though, as Couture discussed during his interview.
“I think ‘Feijao’s’ very, very dangerous, especially in that first round. You saw Dan get a little stunned and he recovered right away, took ‘Feijao’ down but I think clearly ‘Feijao’ won the first round 10-9,” he said. “I think Danny came back with the two takedowns in the second round and won that round 10-9, so it was a round apiece going into the third, anybody’s ball game really. Danny’s patient, stayed right in there, set it up and really clobbered him with a good one. He’s got a nasty right hand.”
Couture himself has a difficult fight against a Brazilian on the horizon, as he is scheduled to take on former UFC 205lbs. champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida this April 30 at UFC 129.
