UFC Live 3: Alessio Sakara Vs. Chris Weidman

Sakara has also been out of the cage for a year, due to illness and opponents getting injured, but Weidman is taking this fight on less than a month’s notice. This will mark Weidman’s UFC debut and will be Sakara’s twelfth trip to the Octagon.

Round 1: Weidman throws a slow head kick that misses.He briefly falls after missing an overhand right. Weidman unable to connect so far, Sakara not throwing much. Sakara with a one-two, leg kick. He lands another slick combination before Weidman tries for a takedown. Sakara stuffs it and Weidman lands an elbow as they break. Weidman lands a nice straight right. Sakara with another combination punctuated by a leg kick. He stalks for a moment with his hands down before Weidman dives for a takedown. Rogan rags on the crowd for chanting “USA.” They separate from the cage and start trading again, with Sakara getting the better of it. Wiedman tries but can’t find another takedown. Leg kick for Weidman. Sakara bleeding from his right eye, from an earlier shot. Sakara with a high kick that is partially blocked. They trade at the bell.

Round 2: Weidman lands first with a right hand. Sakara looks to have slowed a bit and Weidman grabs a single early. Sakara has full guard near the center of the cage. Weidman lands a nice right from the top, then an elbow. Sakara is bleeding badly as Weidman starts to loosen up with the ground and pound. He gets side control on Sakara and looks to be working for the crucifix. Sakara hanging on and keeping Weidman from landing too much, Sakara escapes and tees off with a combination before Weidman dives back in for a takedown against the cage. Sakara back to his feet again, he lands a knee against the cage. His forehead has a cavern cut slashed into it. The ref briefly stops the fight to check Sakara’s cut. Sakara wipes his blood on the ref before the doctor allows it to go on. They get right back to it, trading strikes. Sakara whiffs and Weidman lands a nice left. Sakara goes to the body with two nice hooks. Again. Close round.

Round 3: Sakara has a gob of vaseline over his eye that Weidman’s corner complains about. Sakara going to the body with vicious shots. Weidman lands a knee. Weidman gets a takedown, Sakara looking to use the fence to get up, but Weidman moves him and gets side control. Sakara doing just enough to avoid too much punishment. He establishes half guard. Weidman postures and lands two nice shots. Ref stands them up, questionably. Sakara fires a stiff jab right off the bat and a few more shots before Weidman gets him back down against the cage. Sakara looks up at the clock before Weidman drags him all the way to the mat. 1:30 to go. Sakara briefly hip escapes, but Weidman stays on him. Sakara gets to his feet with :30 to go but Weidman hangs on and drags him back down.
