Jon Fitch Plans To Take BJ Penn’s Legacy And Build His Own

There can be only one!

It has been a recurring theme in BJ Penn’s career that his opponents seek to adopt the aura surrounding him by “killing” or defeating him, like some kind of awesome Japanese fable. It started with Kenny Florian, who proclaimed inside the Octagon following his title-shot netting victory over Joe Stevenson back in 2008, “I consider you a master, and it’s time to kill that master!”

Penn defeated Florian in their fight and therefore did not have his power stolen, but now Jon Fitch is in line to take on BJ and he too has his eyes on acquiring the Hawaiian’s coveted power.

“It’s kind of like, if I kill him, I get his power,” Fitch said in the UFC 127 pre-fight press conference earlier this week. “That’s the way I see it. I play a lot of video games and there are plenty of video games that relate to that. If I can destroy this legend, then I’m going to take all of his wins and put them in my back pocket. I’m going to take that legacy and start building my own.”

Penn was quick to tell Fitch that that won’t be the scenario which plays out tonight, but we won’t know until the dust settles after their scrap whether or not BJ’s power remains intact.

UFC 127: Penn vs. Fitch goes down tonight at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia. Don’t forget to check back on for our live, ongoing coverage of the fight.
