We noted this past weekend that former UFC lightweight contender Kenny Florian will make his featherweight debut at UFC 131 against Diego Nunes. Nunes’ coach, André Pederneiras, revealed to TATAME that the stakes have been raised for the featherweight tussle.
“The winner of this bout will have a title shot,” said Pederneiras. “But, if Diego wins, he’ll only fight for the belt if it’s not on Junior’s hands.”
Florian found himself hitting a wall in the lightweight division as of late. He has lost twice in lightweight title fights and recently saw his third shot at the belt go up in smoke after losing to Gray Maynard in a number one contender’s bout.
Nunes is currently riding a three-fight win streak, with his most recent victory being a split-decision nod over Mike Brown at UFC 125: Resolution on January 1st. His last – and only – loss came via unanimous decision at the hands of LC Davis in November of 2009.
While not officially announced, UFC 131 is expected to take place on June 11, 2011 from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
