Top UFC welterweight fighter Jon Fitch will sqaure off against former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ “The Prodigy” Penn in the main event of UFC 127 later this month. During yesterday’s UFC 127 media conference call, UFC President Dana White revealed that the winner of the fight will become the top contender for the UFC welterweight championship.
“Let’s face it, the reality is Penn has held titles in both weight classes,” said White. “Fitch has fought for the title and has literally dominated that division for a long time, just didn’t win the title. Either one of these guys who wins this fight is in the mix… they’re the number one guy.”
Both fighters have tasted defeat at the hands of current UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who will defend the title against Jake Shields at UFC 129: St-Pierre vs. Shields on April 30.
Since Fitch last fought St-Pierre at UFC 87 in August of 2008, he has compiled a five-fight win streak. Despite the title implications that have been added to his bout with Penn, Fitch noted that he plans to stay focused on the task at hand.
“I don’t want to waste any time thinking about anything other than fighting B.J. right now,” said Fitch.
UFC 127: Penn vs. Fitch will take place on February 27th from the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.
