Despite earlier reports that UFC middleweight Brian Stann would be facing Wanderlei Silva sometime this spring, it appears as though the “All American” will be meeting with recent UFC signee Jorge Santiago. MMAJunkie.com first reported the match up shortly after it was announced that Santiago had re-signed with the UFC.
A former US Marine Corps captain, Stann started off 2011 with a bang by knocking out iron-jawed Chris Leben in the first round of their UFC 125 meeting. With the win, Stann became the second man–the first being Anderson Silva–to dispatch of Leben in such a fashion and he considerably improved his station in the UFC’s middleweight division with the victory. The Greg Jackson camp product is currently enjoying a two-fight winning streak, having rebounded from a unanimous decision loss to Phil Davis at light heavyweight by dropping to middleweight and defeating both Leben and Mike Massenzio. Stann’s current record stands at 10-3.
American Top Team product Jorge Santiago has re-signed with the UFC after a nearly five year absence from the promotion. In his first UFC run, Santiago put together a 1-2 record, knocking out Justin Levens and then getting knocked out by Chris Leben and Alan Belcher before parting ways with the promotion. During his absence, he won both the Strikeforce and Sengoku Middleweight Grands Prix and he left the Sengoku promotion still middleweight champion. He only lost one bout in his twelve post-UFC bouts, a TKO defeat to Mamed Kalidov which he immediately avenged. He has posted recent victories over Jeremy Horn, Trevor Prangley, Siyar Bahadurzada, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Kalidov and Kazuo Misaki. His overall record stands at 23-8.
UFC 130: Edgar vs. Maynard 3 is expected to take place this May 28th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and will feature the lightweight title fight rubber match between champ Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard.
