It’s official, Jonny “Bones” Jones will challenge Mauricio “Shogun” Rua for the UFC light heavyweight championship this March 19th at UFC 128.
Jones posted the picture below as well as the message, “Just signed the shogun contract :-),” to his Twitter account yesterday.
The 23-year old that many are predicting to be the future of the 205-pound division was awarded his shot at “Shogun” after he dispatched of fellow up-and-comer Ryan Bader on the main card of last weekend’s UFC 126 event. Jones thoroughly dominated the very tough Bader en route to a second round submission win and was surprised with the offer of a title shot immediately after his victory was announced, while he was still in the cage.
Jones’ teammate and Rua’s originally scheduled opponent, Rashad Evans, had blown out his knee in training and opened the door for his younger training partner to take the spotlight. He has remained nothing but encouraging to Jones, even going so far as saying that he will move weight classes if Jones wins and keeps the belt.
“Bones” now has six weeks to build onto the training camp he put together for the Bader fight in order to prepare himself for the biggest bout of his young career.
