The tension between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and his former friend and training partner–and now number one middleweight contender–Vitor Belfort was on full display this past Wednesday during their staredown at the conclusion of the UFC 126 pre-fight conference. However, it almost reached a breaking point at yesterday’s weigh-ins for their clash tonight.
After Silva stepped off of the scale he donned a white mask before facing off intensely and exchanging words with Belfort that hardly seemed complimentary; an action taken in response to a recent interview Belfort gave.
“Yesterday I said he wore a mask,” Belfort told Joe Rogan after the two fighters were separated (an act which took most everyone on stage). “I know him, he’s a good man but in the fight he tries to impress and make the fighters afraid of him. That’s what he wants, that’s not what’s going to happen.”
For his part, Silva stayed characteristically vague while addressing the booing crowd and promised only to deliver a spectacle tomorrow night.
“It’s no secret what I said,” said Silva. “Vitor talked a lot. You came here to watch a show. That’s what you’re going to see is a show.”
