The UFC announced on the “Ultimate Insider” webcast that Brian Stann vs. Wanderlei Silva is official for UFC 130 on May 28. The bout is now confirmed despite Silva having expressed some reservations in facing Stann last month.
“We were actually trying to hook [Silva] up with Brian Stann,” White revealed at the UFC Fight For The Troops 2 Q&A session last month. “He doesn’t want to fight Brian Stann. He’s like, ‘F–k that; everybody is going to hate me if I fight Brian Stann. Everybody loves Brian Stann.’ But that’s the fight we’re trying to make right now.”
Silva received surgery to repair his knee last July, after being forced out of a co-main event bout with Yoshihiro Akiyama. The PRIDE FC legend has been recovering well since then, and the timetable for his return has remained basically the same throughout his recovery process: as long as he follows doctor’s orders, he should be able to make a return to the cage in early Spring.
“The Axe Murderer” most recently appeared in the Octagon against Michael Bisping at UFC 110 back in February of 2010, where he bounced back from consecutive losses to Quinton Jackson and Rich Franklin by defeating and almost finishing Michael Bisping. Since making his UFC debut in 2007, Silva has gone 2-3 in the UFC; he has lost to Chuck Liddell, Jackson and Franklin and defeated Keith Jardine and Bisping.
Brian “All American” Stann, a former US Marine Corps Captain, recently scored the biggest win of his MMA career by knocking out iron-jawed Chris “The Crippler” Leben on the main card of UFC 125: Resolution last month. Former WEC light heavyweight champion, Stann has gone 4-2 in the UFC, losing only to Krzysztof Soszynski and Phil Davis, while defeating Steve Cantwell, Rodney Wallace, Mike Massenzio and Leben.
UFC 130 has not yet been officially announced but is expected to take place on May 28, 2011 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is scheduled to be headlined by UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar defending his title against Gray Maynard.
