MMAJunkie.com confirmed today that a welterweight match up between Nate Diaz and Rory MacDonald has been officially added to the upcoming UFC 129 fight card.
Since losing a controversial split decision to number one lightweight contender Gray Maynard in January of last year, Stockton, California native Nate Diaz has made a splash competing in the welterweight division. The mean-mugging 25-year old took out Rory Markham by first round TKO in his divisional debut and followed that victory up with a submission win over Marcus Davis. Unfortunately, Diaz succumbed to defeat against Dong Hyun Kim in his most recent outing, as “Stun Gun” used his stifling grappling offense to earn a unanimous decision with which many MMA fans disagreed. Diaz’s overall record stands at 13-6; he has earned three of his victories by either KO or TKO, nine by submission and one by decision.
21-year old Rory MacDonald rode a hype train into his UFC debut, which was built on the strength of his then 9-0 professional record. He made good on that hype and took out Mike Guymon by first round armbar at UFC Fight Night 20, the same event where Diaz lost to Maynard. Unfortunately for MacDonald, his return trip to the cage would not turn out as well. The young Canadian took on Carlos Condit and appeared to be winning the bout for the majority of the three rounds that they fought, until a late salvo of strikes from Condit ended MacDonald’s night. His overall record stands at 10-1, with four of his victories coming by way of either KO or TKO and six by submission.
UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields is scheduled to take place this April 30th at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and will feature a main event between UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and Diaz’s training partner Jake Shields.
