It was recently revealed that top welterweight contender Paul “Semtex” Daley will be headlining the upcoming British Association of Mixed Martial Arts 5 event against Japanese judoka Yuya Shirai. Daley will be fighting Shirai–the current DEEP welterweight champ–for the vacant BAMMA welterweight title.
Daley is also currently under contract with Strikeforce and recently notched his first win in the promotion by knocking out Scott Smith at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu this past December. That win was enough to place Daley near the front of the relatively sparse pack of Strikeforce 170-pounders, and he will keep that position should he get past Shirai this February.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently revealed Daley’s status as next-in-line during a recent media conference call held in promotion of Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz’s upcoming title defense against Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos (props to Sherdog.com).
“If he loses, the deck’s gonna get reshuffled, and if he wins, then he’ll be the first in line to get the title shot,” Coker said.
Daley will put a shot against the winner of Diaz-Santos at risk this February 26th at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England, where he’ll be looking to extend his post-UFC win streak to four in a row. Diaz and “Cyborg” will square off this Saturday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
