One of the things that you’d hear most often about Melvin Guillard was that the lightweight had unlimited potential if he could properly get his head into the game.
Last night at UFC Fight For The Troops 2, Guillard came one step closer to realizing his potential. Guillard needed less than three minutes to finish lightweight prospect Evan Dunham en route to his fourth straight victory.
Many had felt before last night’s fight that the bout was what Dunham needed to get into title contention after suffering his only loss, a controversial split-decision loss to Sean Sherk at UFC 119. However, Guillard changed those plans and threw his own hat into the lightweight title picture.
“I want my title shot,” Guillard said after the fight. “I’m the dark horse in this game at 155. No disrespect to anybody in my weight class, but I am the best 155-pound fighter in the UFC.”
While Gray Maynard, Anthony Pettis, Clay Guida, and perhaps Kenny Florian are currently positioned higher on the totem pole in the division, Guillard feels confident that he will get his shot soon enough.
“You keep lining ’em up and I’ll keep knocking them down, I will go undefeated in 2011,” he proclaimed. “I will get a title shot before the end of this year, or no later than 2012, I promise you.”
