Strikeforce heavyweight fighter Fabricio “Vai Cavallo” Werdum will make his return to the cage from an injury-induced layoff against Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem in what will be a quarter-final bout in the upcoming Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
Werdum is coming off of the biggest win of his life, having toppled MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko over the summer, and already holds a win over the champion (he defeated Overeem in a PRIDE Grand Prix bout in 2006). Considering this and his claim to full health, Werdum believes that he has everything going for him to win the Grand Prix.
“I feel good. I’m excited for the tournament, my second tournament,” Werdum said in a Strikeforce promo video. “I like the idea, congratulations Scott [Coker]. I’m preparing in everything, stand up, the ground–I’m one hundred percent in my mind and my body. I will win this tournament.”
The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt finds confidence in his recent victory over Emelianenko and his prior win over the current champion. A date has not yet been established for Overeem and Werdum’s impending clash, but “Vai Cavallo” assures his victory whenver that time should come.
“My last fight, I shocked the world, I’ll shock the world one more time,” he said. “My next opponent is [Alistair] Overeem; I beat Overeem three years ago and I’ll beat him one more time.”
