Forrest Griffin Understands Importance Of Bout With Rich Franklin

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin is looking to generate some momentum for himself after having endured over a year-long layoff mandated by a shoulder injury. A winner of The Ultimate Fighter season one, Griffin will get the chance to do so when he steps back in the cage this February to take on Rich Franklin.

Griffin is 1-2 in his last three and hasn’t appeared in action since taking a split decision over Tito Ortiz back at UFC 106 in November of 2009. Speaking during a promo video for his and Franklin’s impending scrap, Griffin relayed his anxiousness to return to the cage.

“Since 2001 I haven’t gone a year without a win, at least a win,” said the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. “And now I’ve gone a whole year without a fight.”

Griffin and Franklin have carved similar paths during their UFC careers, and Griffin believes that they have done so for possessing similar, well-rounded styles which, come fight night, will likely prevent either man from netting a quick finish of the other.

“Me and Rich are kind of the same, we’re jacks of all trades, master of none,” said Griffin. “With Rich, it doesn’t really matter because we’re both pretty good at everything. Definitely Rich is gonna be quicker than me, but he’s not gonna be so much quicker than me that if I make one mistake he’s gonna be able to end the fight.”

Though there exists little to no gap between Franklin and Griffin in terms of overall skills, Griffin may possibly hold an edge in the motivation department, as his desire to return to the cage and get a win is bolstered by his idea of the legacy he wants to leave behind.

“To me this is a huge fight, because I have not won a fight in a year. If I wanna do this, if I wanna be mentioned, if I wanna be in this game and be on big cards, then I need to fight,” he said.

Franklin and Griffin will square off on the main card of UFC 126: Silva vs. Belfort, which will be going down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this February 5th.
