According to Sherdog.com, newly crowned UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is currently receiving surgery to mend a shoulder injury he suffered in winning the belt from Brock Lesnar this past October.
The American Kickboxing Academy-trained Velasquez partially tore his right rotator cuff in the process of putting a beating on Lesnar at their UFC 121 headlining bout, which took place on October 23rd of last year.
In that fight, Lesnar came out of the gates like a freight train, looking to mow over the smaller competitor. Velasquez retained his wits however, and after quickly getting back to his feet when Lesnar took him down, he took control of the fight. The undefeated 28-year old landed a takedown of his own and then started landing clean punches with precision and oomph, putting Lesnar on his heels, reeling about the cage. It was only a matter of time before Velasquez put Lesnar down for the count, hammering away with punches against the cage and opening a gash under Lesnar’s eye.
The referee stepped in to halt the bout, giving Velasquez his seventh TKO win in nine professional fights. The champ’s overall record stands at 9-0, with his other two wins having come via KO (over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira) and decision (over Cheick Kongo).
Velasquez was scheduled to take on number one contender Junior dos Santos for his first title defense, but was forced out of the bout with his shoulder injury. Now, dos Santos and Lesnar will coach opposite one another on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, and will square off upon the conclusion of the show for the next shot at Velasquez.
