UFC lightweight fighter Evan Dunham will headline his first UFC event later this month when he takes on Melvin Guillard in the main event of UFC Fight for the Troops 2. MMANewsLeak.com spoke with Dunham recently about the fight and about what it means for him to have the opportunity to entertain members of the US Armed Forces.
Dunham was originally slated to face perennial contender Kenny Florian on the card, but a knee injury forced “Ken-Flo” out of the bout a little over a month ago. It was announced almost immediately that recent Greg Jackson camp transplant Melvin Guillard would be stepping in for Florian; though the opponent switch came midway through Dunham’s training camp, the Xtreme Couture team member told MMANewsLeak that there were few adjustments to make and that he is happy fighting either man.
“It doesn’t affect much the gameplan except that Melvin’s a righty, Florian’s a Southpaw, so we had to switch that up a little bit,” Dunham said of the adjustments he had to make in training. “In my opinion, Melvin’s just as tough a fighter as Florian, if not more dangerous. It’s gonna be a different fight but I know overall, as a mixed martial artist, my overall game is better than Melvin’s, so I’m just gonna use that to carry me to the win.”
UFC Fight for the Troops 2 is going down on January 22nd at Fort Hood near Killeen, Texas, with an audience almost entirely comprised of US servicewomen and men. Dunham told MMANewsLeak that he is looking forward to putting on a show for the troops and that he anticipates doing just that by engaging in a barnburner with Guillard.
“Oh yeah, I’m real excited. I know they’re gonna be a great crowd,” Dunham said. “I’m looking forward to going out there and having a good time. It’s gonna be a hell of a fight.”
