Gray Maynard Ready For Edgar And A Five Round Fight

Number one UFC lightweight contender Gray “The Bully” Maynard will challenge for the UFC lightweight championship for his first time this Saturday night at UFC 125. Maynard will be taking on lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar, whom he holds a previous victory over dating back to 2008.

“The Bully” spoke with Pro MMA Radio about the fight, which he believes he has all the tools needed to win.

“I train everyday all year long and I wanna prove my tools,” Maynard said. “Wherever it goes, I’m happy about it. It’s a great sport. I plan to do it all. If it’s there, then I’m gonna take it. If not, I feel good wherever it goes.”

On his opponent, Maynard explained he has nothing but respect and goodwill towards Edgar, but that one of them has to lose on Saturday and he doesn’t plan on it being him.

“He’s a great guy, but it’s a job either way,” he said. “There’s a belt now and I gotta be prepared. I don’t care who he is.”

Maynard also believes that the result of their previous scrap won’t have much, if any, bearing on their upcoming meeting.

“It was two and a half years ago. It was then, so it’s done,” said Maynard. “Now it’s a new fight and I’m prepared for that.”

The former NCAA Division-1 wrestler told Pro MMA Radio that he has trained hard in order to be prepared for anything that Edgar can offer and anywhere that the fight may go.

“I gotta be on point everywhere. He’s gonna be prepared, I am too,” he said. “We have a plan, but obviously it’s a fight. It’s gonna go all over the place. It’s gonna be a fun fight, I think.”

Being that this is his first title fight, some have questioned whether or not Maynard will be able to keep up with Edgar in a five round fight. “The Bully” assured that he will be more than ready to take the fight into deep water.

“I usually do about an eight week camp, this one turned out to be a 12 week camp,” said Maynard. “I’m prepared for that, it’s just gonna be a little bit more fun.”

UFC 125: Resolution goes down this Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
