Number one UFC middleweight contender Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort currently has his sights set on the task before him, which is to take the belt from middleweight champion Anderson Silva. That doesn’t mean however, that other fighters don’t have their own crosshairs set on him; in a recent interview with Sensei Sportv (props to Fighters Only), Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva called Belfort out over their 1998 UFC meeting in which Belfort floored Silva in just under :44 seconds.
Silva called the bout a fluke and went on to assert that Belfort is mentally weak and that, should they fight again, he will beat “The Phenom” down. Belfort responded to Silva’s comments (props to Fighters Only again), calling “The Axe Murderer” out for allegedly ducking him while he was at the top of his game as a champion in the PRIDE Fighting Championships.
“That wasn’t just luck, because I trained, I do those techniques until today and I managed what was mine, you know?” Belfort said. “If he asked for, he’ll receive it on the right time. When he was in his prime he wouldn’t like to give me the chance, right?
“That’s funny that when the people are above they forget one day they will be underneath. But I got nothing against him and believe neither him has something against me but that resentful loss.”
Belfort also expressed his willingness to fight Silva, and explained that he believes the fight will happen in due time.
“I think this fight will come true on the right time,” Belfort said. “As Dana said, the time it has to be, that’ll happen.”
For now though, “The Axe Murderer” must sit on the shelf and recover from a recent knee surgery while Belfort takes on Anderson Silva for his middleweight strap. Those two will face off this February 5th in the main event of UFC 126.
