Brazilian knockout artist Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort has been compared to boxing legend Mike Tyson on more than one occasion. Perhaps it should be unsurprising then that Belfort has requested Tyson’s services in helping him prepare for his upcoming bout with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Belfort described a recent interaction with Tyson to Brazilian MMA station Radio Portal do Vale Tudo (props to Sherdog.com for the find).
“I was at his house and met his family,” Belfort said of “Iron” Mike. “I met his daughter and wife, who is pregnant. It’s always nice to be in touch with people like him.”
“The Phenom” shared with Portal do Vale Tudo his admiration for Tyson, whom he has long looked up to and has recently found out to be a fighter with a similar story to his own.
“Mike Tyson is a big idol, and he crossed the boundaries of sport,” Belfort said. “He was a great inspiration to many athletes and in my career since I was a child. We have much in common and had fame too soon. We always have good conversations.”
Belfort also revealed that he has given Tyson an invitation to help him prepare for his impending title fight; stating that he believes Tyson’s understanding of combat sports is undervalued and that he would like to benefit from “Iron” Mike’s wealth of knowledge in the subject.
“I told him that he’s used badly, because he has great views of fighting,” Belfort said. “He knows a lot of martial arts, but they aren’t given the proper value. He said he wanted to be part of my camp, and it was a pleasure to be part of my training. I told him to come in and give me some tips. He’s an important person in the sport and was a great motivator for many successful fighters. I think it’s important to have a recovery.”
Belfort will take on Silva in the main event of UFC 126 this February 5th at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
