A match up between Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem and young heavyweight upstart Todd Duffee has finally been confirmed, according to MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani.
Rumors of the bout sprang up after Duffee hinted at it on his Facebook page yesterday, writing, “Todd Duffee Have no plans on NYE?! Dream Dynamite 2010 : Duffee VS Overeem on HDnet!!!”
However, the post was later removed from his wall and more rumors began leaking that Duffee was pulling out of the bout because he felt the money he was offered wasn’t worth taking a fight on two weeks’ notice against one of the world’s top heavyweights.
Whether or not that is actually the case is unconfirmed, but it does now appear as though Duffee and Overeem will be squaring off on the FEG promoted Dynamite!! 2010 fight card.
Overeem is fresh off of winning the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix, becoming the first MMA fighter to cross over and take the K-1 crown. He last competed in MMA at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery this past May, where he successfully defended his Strikeforce heavyweight title against Brett Rogers. The MMA and kickboxing veteran owns a professional record of 33-11.
25-year old Todd Duffee generated quite a bit of hype for himself while competing in the UFC; he entered the promotion after scoring five KO or TKO finishes in a row in his five professional bouts. He debuted in the promotion against Tim Hague, earning another first round knockout. However, Duffee’s hype train was derailed after he was knocked out in a shocking upset to Mike Russow and then subsequently released from the UFC for having what UFC President Dana White described as a “bad attitude.” His last appearance in the cage was against Russow in May.
Dynamite!! 2010 will take place this New Year’s Eve at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
